F.P. Spirit unfolds this story in a way that reveals the nature of the characters by showing them in action with one another. There are few large blocks of back story or character exposition. The absence of these telling-techniques keeps the story moving forward while allowing readers to get to know the characters. There is a good balance of interior monologue on the part of each character and enough personal history is provided to let readers connect with each of the principal players. I really like the way these characters are getting to know each other’s quirks, faults and strengths through situations where they are called upon to work together to win the battles they encounter. The magic and creatures are wonderful and never ending. Something new and entertaining is introduced in every conflict. I won’t give away any specifics, but I do have my preferred creatures, based on their uniqueness. It’s obvious from the title of my review who my favorite character is, and I do expect to be notified when Lloyd’s action figure is available for purchase. However, I really like this entire team, and my second favorite is Seth. This book is pretty much non-stop action, and when the team rests, the reader is ready for a rest also. Lots of interesting secondary characters people this fiction, and I think this is a great adventure book for young readers.Product details

“The Ruins on Stone Hill” is a great adventure/fantasy tale that captured my attention from the first page. Its characters are an unlikely group consisting of a human, elf, halfling and gnome, who are all young and inexperienced, trying to master their craft and find their way while defending a small town from the deadly creatures that surround it. As the story unfolds, several more adventurers provide assistance along the way. I appreciate the author’s use of names that are creative but not so unusual that they are difficult to remember. The characters are very likeable, and the relationship that develops between them is endearing and becomes stronger with every new adventure. Speaking of adventures, the battle scenes within the story are very descriptive but not too gory for those of us who might not appreciate that sort of thing. The story has just the right amount of fantasy, action/adventure, mystery and even a bit of romance to keep the pages turning. It is a well-written and well-paced book that forms a wonderful foundation for the series. I recommend it highly!
The Ruins on Stone Hill is a book about a group of young male heroes who in order to make a name for themselves defend the city of Ravenford from various evils. The men in this group are varied in the DnD Tolkien manner; Elf Wizard, Human Warrior, Halfling Rogue, Gnome Cleric…Well, gnomes aren’t traditional, and neither are these guy’s personality. Except for the snarky Halfling Rogue.
If you love reading action like me, then you’ll love this book. There’s quest after quest of terrific fighting scenes. The author has a real talent for writing great action scenes with a good amount of suspense that keeps you reading. The book has a good pace, never boring or too jumbled. Even though it follows well-worn ground, it still manages to feel original.
A band of misfits come together to become the Heroes of Stone Hill (as some call them). They go upon quest after quest for the Baron, after kicking some Orc booty and find a document for the town wizard. This little band consists of an elfin mage, a Halfling ninja, a gnome healer and a large human warrior. After their first encounter with the orcs, they team with a couple of guys for hire (a tracker and a warrior) and even later an elfin bard.
I haven't read a lot of Fantasy but this was an enjoyable read, and I intend to read more of Mr. Spirit's books. THE RUINS ON STONE HILL was not only captivating, it was fun and hard to put down.
Sword and Sorcery doesn't get any better than this. I couldn't put it down - Thank heavens for a free weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed the development of the camaraderie, the incremental increase of abilities, and the back stories of the characters. This was like reading a full on D&D game with out having to mess with the dice.
I so want to blurt out the details but that would spoil it. The ending is most satisfying and wraps up what needs to be wrapped but the author definitely dangles a carrot that leaves you wanting the next installment in the series. This book is unique and entertaining. It reminded me of years ago in my youth when I played Bards Tale or D&D. The book will bring alive Old School Fantasy Sword and Sorcery like you haven't read in a long time.
I appreciate that this was written for the YA crowd, but I'd like to say that as a fifty something I loved it cover to cover.
I have purchased the next two in the series and am glad that I have one more day in the weekend to put a dent into them.
Five Stars - all the way
You can tell that this author is a fan of fiction. He has compiled a cast of all the typical, cliche, characters one would find in a variety of fiction stories. The story was fun, but didn't have a lot of meat to it. We learned a small bit about each character, but not enough to really care about them. The characters all had different talents which made them a good team, but things were way too easy, defeating all the enemies too easily with little risk of danger. There is no loss, so no growth. They don't learn any lessons from hardship.
Saying all that, it was a fun read, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants something light to escape the trials of real life.
